The Los Angeles County Human Relations Commission reports a 5 year all time high in hate crimes.
The report said there was an overall increase of 28% in 2007 over 2006.
Also reported was:
9% increase in hate crimes based on sexual orientation
17% increase in hate crimes based on religion (nearly three-quarters of them were anti-Jewish.)
“According to the U.S. Justice Department, for every hate crime that is reported to police, as many as 28 are not reported, often for fear of retaliation or concerns about talking to authorities.”
In Knoxville TN a gunman killed two and wounded six others just this last Sunday at a local church. The police investigation cited a note written by the gunman which stated in part his reason for attacking the church as:
“Adkisson wrote that he was angered by “his lack of being able to obtain a job,” a reduction in his food stamp allotment, and “the liberal movement.” Owen explained the liberal movement, as defined by Adkisson, included liberal philosophies and issues pertaining to gays.”
In Warren County TN a gay man has had his home vandalized for the 9th time as reported on May 25, 2008.
On July 1, 2008 the body of a murdered trans woman was found in Memphis TN.
In June of 2008 a trans woman was severely beaten by Memphis Police officers while in custody.
Closer to home, in the “Couve” this was reported today by FOX 12 News:
“The words “white power” and “I’m gay” were etched into the car of Karen Wastradowski last Saturday.”
“Wastradowski said a blue “Elect Obama” sign in her yard could have caused the crime.”
What ever the cause, even if the police believe the vandal was a teenager, but they don’t have any suspects, the reality is that someones property was vandalized with hateful racial and homophobic epithets.
Fear of something is at the root of hate for others, and hate within will eventually destroy the hater.

Homophobia is like racism and anti-Semitism and other forms of bigotry in that it seeks to dehumanize a large group of people, to deny their humanity, their dignity and personhood.
