The Oregon Lavender Vote

Posted by Laura Calvo on 28th October 2008

The race for Oregon’s U.S. Senator race may very well be the election that will give Barack Obama the 60th vote in the senate.

The race has been identified on a national level as a very tight race that may be decided by a few percentage points. That means every vote will count when the point spread is so tight.

Enter GLBT Oregonians. The Oregon Lavender Vote.

Estimates of Oregon’s GLBT electorate vary. However, the estimates from scholars and people who study such things range from a low of 3% to a high of 10% of the Oregon electorate.

A 3 percentage point margin in favor of Jeff Merkley on election night may very well be the winning deciding factor.

Jeff Merkley in the U.S. Senate will mean a big difference in Supreme Court Justice appointments as the senate must approve those appointments. Which means that two pro-equality Oregon senators will be voting on those appointments.

Jeff Merkely in the U.S. Senate could possibly make the 60 vote margin needed to prevent killing important legislation needed to put our country back on track.

Oregon GLBT voters will possibly hold the key to winning a very tight race where every vote counts as precious.

Gordon Smith knows this and that’s why he is desperately airing an ad that says he supports gay rights in one market.

But then Smith shows his true colors by simultaneously running an ad in another market smearing Constitution Party candidate Dave Brownlow for supporting gay marriage. (Something which Brownlow does not support)

By trying to smear Brownlow as a gay marriage supporter, Smith loses all credibility as a supporter of gay rights. In fact it’s another Smith blatant betrayal of all the GLBT people who have supported him in the past. It’s an out right insult to use the issue of gay rights and gay marriage to pander votes in a win-at-all-costs campaign. Gordon Smith can’t be for and against gay rights in different markets and not pay dearly for such a two-faced position.

If the Oregon LGBT electorate is only 3% as some suggest, it would be nothing short of sweet justice to see Mr. Smith lose this election by that 3% margin and have to return to running his frozen pea plant in the middle of nowhere eastern Oregon.

Make sure you cast your ballot.

Merkley Targeted For Support By NSD

Posted by Laura Calvo on 22nd October 2008

National Stonewall Democrats endorsed Jeff Merkley and have targeted his race as a national priority for support.

The following email went out today in a follow up mail piece sent to thousands of households across the nation.

A nationwide phone bank is underway to further support these identified key races across the country.

National Stonewall Democrats were a critical factor in defeating the likes of virulently anti-gay Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum who also compared same-sex marriages with polygamy among other things. Does that sound familiar?

CONFIDENTIAL MEMO

FROM:         EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR JON HOADLEY

TO:              STONEWALL DEMOCRATS

SUBJECT:    ELECTION STRATEGY

CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD THE 30-DAY STONEWALL STRATEGY

John McCain’s selection of Sarah Palin demonstrates that the Republican Party is still the party of James Dobson and Pat Robertson.

According to Time Magazine, Wasilla Bible Church is one of the largest and most influential organizations in the “Bible Belt” region of southern Alaska. It’s not surprising then that the city’s former councilmember and mayor Sarah Palin is a member. However, it is alarming that Palin chooses to worship at a church that promotes conversion therapy for “homosexuals” and supported Focus on the Family’s recent “ex-gay” conference Love Won Out. Should she be Vice President?

It’s unfortunate and disappointing that McCain – while he has always maintained a poor record on issues of equality for LGBT Americans – has been so quick to sell out his principles and flip-flop on almost every important issue facing our country and our world to win an election. From the top of the ticket on down, we can – and after eight long years of George W. Bush we must – do better.

Make no mistake about it, the future of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender rights movement is at stake in this election. If McCain wins, ENDA, hate crimes, domestic partner benefits for federal employees – all those issues so critically important to us and to the strength of our families – will stall or even fail.

Not only must we win at the top of the ticket with Barack Obama and Joe Biden, we need to elect pro-equality Democrats up and down the ticket from coast to coast and build our numbers in government and advance progressive legislation that creates greater opportunity for all Americans.

STONEWALL STRATEGY

Please download and review the Stonewall Strategy and consider a generous contribution of $5000, $2500, $1000, $500, $250, or $100 to the National Stonewall Democrats PAC to ensure we have the resources necessary to invest in our local chapters, elect pro-equality Democrats and defeat anti-marriage equality ballot initiatives across the country.

PAC

Your PAC contribution will be put to work immediately in the remaining 30 days of this election to ensure pro-equality Democratic pick-ups in the U.S. House and Senate, as well as in targeted state legislative races across the country, including in Texas where Democrats are down by only 5 seats in the state house.

In addition, the Obama campaign will send hundreds of LGBT volunteers to battleground states like Nevada, New Mexico, Colorado and Ohio between October 31st and November 4th to get out the vote for Obama and Democrats up and down the ticket. Are you willing to travel to a battleground state to help elect Barack Obama?  Please contact Obama Pride National Co-Chair Jesse Garcia, jessegarciadallas@gmail.com.

Make a contribution today for the future of the Democratic Party and the struggle for full equality.

Merkley Endorsed by National LGBT Organization

Posted by Laura Calvo on 16th September 2008

NSD

Jeff Merkley, Oregon’s U.S. Senate democratic candidate,  earned the endorsement of National Stonewall Democrats.

National Stonewall Democrats is a grassroots network connecting LGBT Democratic activists from Seattle, Washington to Austin, Texas to Little Rock, Arkansas to Atlanta, Georgia. With more than 90 chapters across the country, Stonewall is a grassroots force for social change within our movement and within our party. Our members do the hard work of calling voters, putting together campaign mailings, going door-to-door for our fair-minded candidates and having tough conversations with Democratic party officials about why our families need and deserve more support from our party and its elected officials.

Laura Calvo, a member of National Stonewall Democrats board of directors and interim President of the Democratic Party of Oregon GLBT Caucus, said it was her honor to announce the endorsement of Jeff Merkley. Calvo said, “Jeff Merkley has been unequivocal in his support of equality for our entire community and every American family.  I think it’s very important to acknowledge Jeff’s significant contributions and leadership in regards to the issues of fair employment opportunities, having the equal right to provide for our families as every other American family has the right to do without question and for all Americans to be treated with dignity. In addition, Jeff Merkley has been an effective voice in the legislature in many other areas. From improving the Oregon economy, to ending predatory pay-day loan practices, to being one of the most effective advocates for public safety and protecting the rights of victims of crime, Jeff Merkley has been an effective leader. ”

Continuing, Calvo also said, ” Jeff Merkely’s record on the issues of what really matters to working Oregoninans is exemplary. To attempt to discredit that record with gutter generated attack ads is a mixture of twisted ethics and desparation unbecoming any sitting elected representative of the people of Oregon, especially a U.S. Senator. All too often GLBT Americans are the victims of violent crime or subjected to abusive slurs and vulgar rumors simply for being who we are. We are pretty good at recognizing smears and twisted outright lies for what they represent.  We’ve spent too many years of our lives fighting those kinds of vulgar attacks.  When confronted with sleazy attacks and lies we only go to work and fight that much harder to expose the truth. Oregon voters resent lies and aren’t fooled by sleezy campaign smears.”

Merkley Press Conference

Posted by dporta on 15th September 2008

Anyone who has recently stayed awake long enough to hear the weather report, or better yet enjoy some Letterman, has undoubtedly had to endure the mind-numbingly insulting political ads put out by the Gordon Smith campaign, aimed at undermining the record and character of Jeff Merkley.  I know I have.  Evidently Governor Roberts has, as well.  And she is NOT happy, nor are the droves of new volunteers and contributors that the campaign has picked up in the last couple of weeks, who are absolutely disgusted by the Smith campaign.

Today, Merkley’s campaign held a press conference to respond to the spate of Smith ads, and in particular, the one around the statute of limitations, which assumes that we are dumb enough to believe that Jeff Merkley favors the rights of rapists, over those of victims.  As Governor Roberts says, in her wonderfully blunt way, “these ads are simply lies”.

Another gentleman who spoke (I didn’t catch his name) hit the nail on the head, when he grouped Smith and McCain together in their tactics and in how little they seem capable of, or willing to discuss actual issues, like Iraq, healthcare, or the shaky economy that gets more so every day.

Now I realize that these scare tactics may still work on a few voters. However, what Smith, and the GOP in general, fail to notice is that their methods no longer frighten, but rather offend, most voters these days, and that those numbers grow more and more every day.  Jeff Merkley and Governor Roberts have been very clear in their faith that Oregonians are sharp enough to see through the smokescreens that Smith is attempting (and by all accounts failing) to put up.  I would have to agree.  I have yet to meet ANYONE who has fallen for Smith’s lines (and lies).  It is only Smith and his campaign, who fail to realize that political slime being, as an effective campaign tactic, is on its last legs.

What purpose does the GLBT Caucus serve?

Posted by jkerns on 7th September 2008

The Multnomah Democrats’ GLBT Caucus adopted a tagline that exemplifies the purpose of the caucus: “Informing the Democratic Party about GLBT issues; informing the GLBT community about Democratic issues.”

Over the past few months we have strived to accomplish these goals.  Many candidates and/or their campaign staff have addressed the caucus meetings including Democratic US Senate Candidate Jeff Merkley, Portland City Commissioner Candidate Amanda Fritz (non-partisan), and Democratic House District Candidates Nick Kahl (49) and Greg Matthews (50). These successful meetings (especially when Jeff Merkley attended the meeting) gave the GLBT community direct access to the candidates to ask them questions pertaining to GLBT issues.  In so doing, the candidates were educated about GLBT issues and the GLBT community became informed about Democratic issues.

During the three months leading to the general election, the Multnomah Democrats’ GLBT Caucus has used its meeting time to directly volunteer for targeted campaigns.  Michael Bidwell, Treasurer for the Multnomah Democrats’ GLBT Caucus said, “Volunteering for campaigns as a caucus serves not only to help progressive candidates get into office, but reminds candidates of the issues the GLBT community faces every day”.  So far, the Caucus has volunteered as a group for Nick Kahl and Jeff Merkley.  We will volunteer for Greg Matthews on October 7 from 7:30-9:00 pm.  There will be something for everyone: envelope stuffing, phoning, etc.

To become involved and/or to attend the October 7 meeting with Greg Matthews, please contact Joey Kerns at Multnomah.chair(at)stonewalloregon(dot)org.

2008 DNC: Hope + Change = Equality For All

Posted by Laura Calvo on 30th August 2008

Our Oregon delegation is back from the Democratic National Convention.  I can only speak for myself, but it would probably fair to say we were all left breathless with emotions at one point or another during our  convention.

KC Hanson, Sam Sappington and myself arrived three days ahead of the DNCC to attend the National Stonewall Democrats convention. Frank Dixon was there too. With his duties as Vice Chair of the DPO, Frank was left with a few unavoidable scheduling conflicts.  All of us suspected we too would be having our fair share of scheduling problems in the coming days.  There were just so many events and too little time. I had over 20 pages of spread sheets with event information. Everything from political forums and receptions to baseball games and rock concerts. There was even a poker tournament with Ben Affleck to benefit paralyzed veterans.

At last count,  continuing to rise at the convention, 374 LGBT people officially registered as delegates, alternate delegates, committee people, or convention pages at the 2008 DNCC in Denver. Interestingly, if the 374 person delegation were a state delegation, we would be the third largest state delegation, with only California and New York having more delegates.

The aftermath of last years non-inclusive ENDA struggle some of the detracting sentiment heard by our community was related to trans people not being considered a  part of the larger gay and lesbian community, trans folk had been riding on the coat tails of the gay and lesbian community, and that trans people had done a really poor job of lobbying their congressional representatives to be included in ENDA. On the flip side of that issue was over 300 LGBT advocacy organizations that opposed the non-inclusive ENDA, holding fast to the commitment that we are a community which can not be divided.

The convention personally and politically touched me on so many levels as a latina lesbian transwoman with a gay son, another son in the military, a gay nephew who adopted a child with his partner, a lesbian niece who works her fingers to the bone in health care, and as an American. Not to mention being a member of one of possibly one of the most marginalized groups of people in society, doubly complicated by being a part of another traditionally marginalized group of people.

September 5th will mark the thirteenth anniversary of the time I was involuntarily outed at work and forced into a disability retirement solely because my trans history was discovered and was labeled a freak.  It took a long time for me to recover from that ugly time in my life to get where I am at today.

For anyone, gay, straight, or otherwise, who has any doubt that I, or any other trans person,  have no worth, do not deserve equal rights, can wait while the rest of the community moves forward to equality under some sort of instrumentalist theory, or are not a part of the larger gay and lesbian community, I don’t have the words to respond politely.

We are not gay people. We are not lesbians. We are not bisexual or trans persons. We are people, inseparable and inextricably connected to one another. Our allied brothers and sisters come from a diverse mix of colors, issues, and unique personal histories.

On the anniversary of the “I have a dream speech” delivered by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. another momentous time in history also happened at Invesco Field in Denver Colorado.  The Democratic Party became united. But that is not the whole of the legacy of Barack Obama. I believe the message of hope and change for a better and brighter future for all of us was heard around the world.

Barack Obama is the real deal. Certainly our world is not in a happy place and will likely never be a perfect place. If you’re view is the “glass is half empty”, as is much of the the world in this time in history, then perhaps it is time to start viewing your world as a glass being half full. Fill yourself with the hope that we can work together to change our world for the better.

We must end the war in Iraq but maintain our security at home and elsewhere with intelligence and diplomacy. We must never again adopt a policy which includes the preemptive invasion of another country. We need a commander-in-chief who will not squander our best and brightest for the sake of a dollar. We need to feel the safety of our homes and streets.

We urgently need to begin the restructure of our health care delivery here at home, making health care a basic right for all people.

We must change the way the system works against families of all kinds. Children should not go hungry and parents should not have to work three or four jobs just to keep a roof over their heads and safe nutritious food on the table.

We must all work to guarantee that the people who we elect to represent us do actually represent us and work for our benefit.

We must continue to be vigilant of those who wish to keep us oppressed and deny basic civil rights to us and our families simply because of who we love, our skin color, or how we are born. Not just LGBT people, but all people must be equal in all respects.

Having come from Denver this last week, I see what is meant by the saying that politics is the art of the possible. The possibilities for LGBT people and all people is palpable.

Our brush stroke in the art of the possible is clearly defined and well within our means.  We must indivually and as a whole and united community engage in the belief of change and hope for a better future.

We have a very clear calling, along with some very clear steps we all need take to be bring about the change we all hope for.

We are democrats. Our core values are adopted and defined in our party platform. We are included and a part of the intrnsic fabric of our democratic party. Our well being is woven into those core values expressed in the party platform and echoed in the true meaning of our constitution. We have the tools and means to effect the change we want. We as gay, lesbian, bisexual an transgender are empowered to participate in the change and hope for a better future for all our sakes. We simply can not afford to stand back and watch our future dissolve before our eyes.

Here in Oregon, we have a responsibility as a community to step up to the plate. As a community we have no choice choice but become fully engaged as a community.  Where ever we are in life, we must consider the intolerable outcome if we fail to act now!

We are less than two months away from the election. If you have any spare time or resources to spare in the next two months, consider making an investment in your future.

If you ask yourself or doubt that you can make a difference, please reach out to any democratic campaign office in the state. Call or write your friends and relatives, even those in other states and beg them to support democratic candidates where ever they may be. If you’re still not convinced you can and do make a difference feel free to email treasurer (at) stonewalloregon (dot) org.

Here are a couple of links to get you started:

Jeff Merkley for US Senate

Jeff Merkley is a champion for GLBT people everywhere. As our Speaker of the Oregon House of Representatives, Jeff Merkely was one of the crucial keys to bringing the Oregon Equality and Family Fairness Act from a dream to reality.

Unlike Jeff Merkely’s republican opponent who tries to pretend to be good on our issues, while voting in favor of the Federal Marriage Amendment twice and comparing relationship equality to polygamy. Please contrast that to the fact that the republican nominee for president voted against the Federal marriage Amendment Act.

The Democratic Party of Oregon, Basic Rights Oregon and eQuality Giving have all enthusiastically endorsed my personal freind Jeff Merkley.

LGBT for Obama

This site has been specifically set up for the LGBT community to easily get involved in helping to elect Barack Obama. The site and drive behind it is the work Oregonian Terry Bean.

Transgender Community and Allies:

Trans folk and their allies with National Stonewall Democrats have set up an easy to use web page to support Barack Obama. It’s a great way to show your support for Obama and the trans people in your life.

Barney Frank RE: John Mccain

Posted by Laura Calvo on 9th August 2008

“In a number of areas, Senator John McCain is praised for moderation that he has not in fact shown in his votes.”

Hon. Barney Frank (D-MA)

Sound kind of familiar? Trying to look like a moderate, but not when you look at the votes on the floor of the Senate. Most especially so when it comes election time?

Frank goes on to say,

“With one exception, the relevance of which Senator McCain himself is rapidly diminishing, John McCain’s record is completely opposed to our efforts to combat prejudice and gain legal equality.”

“The one exception has to do with his vote against the constitutional amendment that would have banned marriage.”

Here’s why it sounds familar. Oregon’s current Republican junior Senator and who is also McCain’s Oregon campaign chair is trying hard to appear moderate at election time, just like McCain.

Back to Barney Frank,

“He [McCain] did vote against that amendment [Federal Marriage Amendment] on states’ rights grounds. But in his effort to win over the right wing support he has needed to secure the Republican nomination and hold Republican votes in November, he has paved the way for a retreat from that position.”

Oregon’s Republican junior Senator doesn’t need to pave any kind of way to retreat to hold Republican votes. Thats because Oregon’s Republican junior Senator already voted twice to support the Federal Marriage Amendment.

Representative Barney Frank of Massachusetts does share something in common with a particular Oregonian. That would be Speaker of the Oregon House of Representatives Jeff Merkley who is the pro-equality Democratic candidate for U.S. Senator from Oregon. Both Jeff Merkley and Barney Frank are endorsed by eQuality Giving.org

Bush’s parting gift to extreme right wing special interests

Posted by Laura Calvo on 20th July 2008

A New York Times article is reporting that the Bush Administration wants to require any recipeint of federal health program funding certify they will not refuse to hire medical providers who object to abortion and certain types of birth control.

“For nearly a decade, George Bush and Republicans in Washington D.C. have tried to force their conservative agenda on the American people. Now, within months of electing a Democratic President, the Bush Administration is considering a parting gift to extreme right wing special interests.”

“The Bush Administration is trying to roll back a woman’s right to choose. And they’re doing it under the radar, hoping no one will notice.
